This functionality is available only for cardholders in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain and is not supported by all Acquirers or Issuers. For more information, contact a member of our support team.
The Address Verification Service (AVS) verifies the cardholder's address by checking the information provided at the time of sale against the Issuer's records. If a transaction fails the AVS check, it will not automatically be declined. Instead, AVS acts as an advisory service and requires that the details of non-matched transactions be checked by your application.
For direct API integration, the AVS data is passed in the billing code address element and must be formatted correctly depending on the billing country of the cardholder, as shown in the following table.
| Billing Country | Format | Sample Address | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| US or CA | Concatenate the postcode and first line of the customer's billing address with a '|' in the middle. | Flat 123 House 456 Chicago 50001 United States | "50001|Flat 123" |
| GB | Concatenate just the digits from the postcode and first line of the customer's billing address with a '|' in the middle. | Flat 456 House 123 Halifax WB3 A21 United Kingdom |
For both the postcode and the first line of the address check, the following values can be returned.
| Value | Description |
|---|---|
| M | Matched |
| N | Not Matched |
| I | Problem with check |
| U | Unable to check, for example, Issuer not certified |
| P | Partial Match |
